As an
auto race fan who happens to be Black, this time of the year is one the most difficult, distressing, depressing and upsetting of the entire racing season. To know the fact that only two Black Drivers, only two Black men have raced in the
Indy 500 and none, zero, uni have raced in NASCAR's World 600 in Charlotte in close to 50 years speaks volumes to the true racial attitudes we Americans are still dealing with, especially in the racing world.
The fact that there has been 5 times as many White Females that have competed in the Indy 500 and only one in NASCAR's 600 tells us who is still in control of who races on Memorial Day.
From the start of race coverage a week ago, we race fans see a total White Out of Drivers, Crew Members, Car Owners, TV Commentators,
NASCAR Officials, and people from other countries where there should have been African-American representatives. We don't, but the racing goes on.
NASCAR's Brian France and
Indy Racing League Tony George should be ashamed and embarrassed in this day and time with an African-American President seated in the
White House, not to have one African-American Driver in the NASCAR's 43 or Indy 500's 33.
Many will point to the economy, but society and racing has been dealing with a poor economy for most of my adult life, somehow these racing go on. The sanctioning bodies still finds teams, sponsors, and fans to attend these races year after year. Its just to say that they are not putting a strong effort into bring real and meaningful diversity, getting Black Driver qualified to race..
My Black Community is not taking a more pro-activities stand in getting or supporting Black Competitors in auto racing, so they are to also blame too. To many Black People of means and with resources are directed or told to invest in other endeavors and turned away from supporting other Blacks in racing.
Most interested Blacks get into NASCAR from the Car Owner's position, because they can buy a established team and go racing with little objection, he is keeping people employed. In the history of NASCAR there has never been an Black Person of means or resources that have purchased a ride for himself in any of the top divisions of NASCAR.
Although Juan Montoya is a Hispanic Driver from another country,
Latin American people all over the country support his efforts and sponsorships are ready and willing to get behind him becasue they see the dollars in the Latino Market. He does have a great track record in other racing divisions, but given the few years he has raced in NASCAR, his success has not been that overwhelming.
Its like we Black Driver don't exist. We do exist and we are ready to get behind the wheel and show the world we can race and will kick butt on the racetrack. We have the desire, the determination, the ambition, the attitude and the abilities to be winners.
We have proven that we can win, just ask
Wendell Scott. we can race today, ask
Bill Lester, we can win on road courses ask Willy T. Ribbs.
Even I can race, at the age of 56, God has told me I am a Driver and has shown me in my dreams that I can win in NASCAR. Yep, that sounds a little crazy, but I'm not going to stand there and doubt what God has placed and expressed in your mind, body, and spirit.
Personally speaking, if I had the support back in the 80's when I started my racing career on the track I would and could have changed the world. But that met dealing with the attitudes of the day of the fans, Corporate America and
NASCAR Nation and back then the welcome matt was not there.
But if anyone had the heart, desire and determination to achieve success and win races in NASCAR it was and still is in me. Check out my website,

Today's racing culture seems so hard to reach, the road to compete has so many pot holes, a person has so many bridges to build and cross, it would take a lifetime just to get noticed and make people see you are the real deal and serious about competing.
Corporate America has got to stop being so cowardly in its marketing and sells campaign and stop being afraid to allow Black People to market racing in the Black Community. Black Competitors should not be afraid to use their Blackness to win success in getting involved in racing. Racers use whatever advantage they can to race and to win, why can't Black Men do the same?
It was easier for a Black Man to become President of the United States than to become a
NASCAR Nextel Cup Driver mainly because White Males don't dominate to voting booths.
